Summary:
Dr. Eric W. Stein, Executive Director of the Center of Excellence for Indoor Agriculture, recently spoke at the conference on the role of CEA in supporting the development of acquired resilience for human health.
What, When and Where:
- Academic conference presentation
- September 25, 2024
- Society for Acquired Resilience Annual Conference, Philadelphia, PA
Who:
- Eric W. Stein, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Management Science, Penn State and Executive Director of the Center of Excellence for Indoor Agriculture
Description:
This presentation examined the production of leafy greens and other vegetables using controlled environmental agriculture (CEA) methods and how such methods can contribute to acquired resilience. We discussed how CEA can (1) minimize the use of pesticides in production; (2) maximize concentrations of beneficial phytonutrients; (3) modify the rate of growth and the morphology of various plants; and (4) minimize the use of water, floor space and other inputs to achieve high yields. We also discussed some recent research along these lines and provide examples of high-tech CEA indoor farms. We closed with reflections on future research on this topic.
